Anantnag (Kokernag), Jan 15 (KNO): Authorities have successfully managed to reopen Sinthan-Kishtwar road for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) fitted with anti-skid chains, in record time, despite the harsh winter conditions. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kokernag in an order, a copy of which lies with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) stated the road is open only for "chain-linked tare light motor vehicles" as reported by the graduate engineer of NHIDCL. As per the advisory, the vehicles will be allowed to move between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, provided weather remains clear. Traffic Police and SHO Larnoo have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the timings and seize any vehicle violating the directive. This is the first time the road has been cleared for traffic so quickly; in previous years, the highway remained closed for several months after snowfall. The reopening is particularly pivotal as the highway has become vital to the region’s booming tourism industry. “A large number of youths rely on roadside stalls and small businesses around Daksum and Sinthan Top, making it a lifeline for them. When the road is closed, business comes to a halt, and people suffer. This quick action has restored hopes,” said an official. Local vendor Reyaz Ahmad, who runs a stall at Daksum during the peak tourist season, praised the authorities for their timely efforts in reopening the road. “Opening the road in this harsh winter period is a wonderful achievement. We are hopeful that we can soon resume our work and support our families,” he said. SDM Kokernag, Suheel Ahmad Lone, speaking to KNO, said, “Our primary aim was to boost tourism in the area, and we worked tirelessly to clear the road as quickly as possible. The road leads to popular tourist spots like Daksum and Sinthan Top, so its reopening is crucial for the local economy. We have successfully completed the clearance of the first snowfall.”—(KNO)
